Beyond Color: Explore Your Seasonal Style

The color is right. So why doesn't it feel right?

You've found a top in one of your best colors, but once you put it on, something still feels off.

It may be the shape. The amount of detail. The fabric. The proportions. Or simply that the overall effect doesn't feel like you.

Color is an important part of the picture. This course helps you understand the other components that influence why an outfit feels visually harmonious with you.

Know what makes clothing work for you

  • Understand your starting point

Recognize the lines, proportions, level of detail and other qualities that naturally harmonize with you.

  • Make better wardrobe choices

Begin to see why one garment feels right while another, even in the perfect color, does not.

  • Develop your own sense of style

Use what you learn as a guide for making outfits that feel personal rather than simply following trends or someone else's formula.

Joan's Approach

Style begins with understanding the individual

Joan's approach to style starts with the same principle as her work with color: the individual comes first.

Rather than beginning with trends, rules or a style type, you'll look at the qualities already present in you: your natural lines, proportions, complexity and visual impression; and explore how clothing can reflect them.

The goal isn't to create a new version of yourself. It's to make more intentional choices that support who you already are.

The qualities that shape your style

Your natural lines
Explore the shapes and lines that naturally relate to your own physical qualities, and how those lines can be reflected in clothing.

Your personal complexity
Understand how much visual detail feels harmonious for you, from simplicity to complexity, layering, prints and visual weight.

Texture, form and proportion
See how fabric, structure, scale and the relationship between pieces affect the overall impression.

Your inherent visual impression
Consider what you naturally communicate before clothing is added, and how style can support or intentionally shift that impression.

Different ways style can be expressed
Explore a range of style expressions and consider which elements feel most natural to you, without reducing yourself to a single type.

Putting it into practice
Use the course exercises and worksheets to translate what you notice into more intentional wardrobe choices that work for you.

A whole new world

Have been loving all your recorded lessons!! Watched some 2 or 3 times. Have completed all your courses except online shopping— and I'm half-way through that! Can’t get enough! You’ve opened up a whole new world for me.

The Style Course solidly moved my wardrobe from a 4 to a 10! It broke bad habits, provided insights, new perspectives, and established clear guidelines for cultivating the wardrobe that fit my lifestyle and personality. Zeroing in on my personal style combination -– Elegant + Creative -- was the highlight for me in this course. I’ve learned to use elements of style to maintain an elevated simplicity, and a refined look that is the hallmark of my Sophisticated Spring style.

I'm really grateful to you, Joan, and to this course/journey: I've realized so many things. I won't bore you with them all, the most important part/ essence point is that I know I've touched on Me. And I now know where I lost myself and where I need to to go next with my style.

FAQ

  • Do I need to know my season?

You'll get the most from this course if you already understand your seasonal type and have had a professional seasonal color palette. But if you feel confident in your own assessment of your season/colors then this will help you grow your understanding of how you integrate it with your personal style aesthetic.

  • Do I need to take Making the Most of Your Seasonal Color Palette first?

No. The courses are designed to complement one another, but each can be taken independently. If your main questions are still about using and understanding your colors, start with Making the Most of Your Seasonal Color Palette. If you're more interested in why the clothing itself still feels great or just meh, Seasonal Style is likely the better starting point.

  • Does this course teach a particular style typing system?

Joan references a number of established style concepts during the course, including the seven universal styles found in retail as indentified by Alyce Parsons and others. They are used as one lens for exploring style through an additional lens of seasonal types and sub-types. The broader focus of the course is understanding your own inherent qualities and how they can be expressed through clothing.

  • Is this a fashion or trend course?

No. The course focuses on understanding the qualities that make clothing harmonious for you. Trends may come and go; what you learn here is intended to give you a more enduring way to evaluate them.

Yes. You'll have ongoing access to the course videos through your Thinkific account.

  • Can I ask questions as I go?
